Diageo Great Britain

Although we're a global company, Great Britain will always be our home. Today, we are one of the region's leading exporters, helping to fly the flag for British business in over 180 countries.

Overview

Since John Walker first started blending whisky in 1820, to the exceptional work our teams are doing today to protect the environment and empower local communities, Great Britain has always been a hugely important region, not least because it's our home. Spanning all price points and categories, we push forwards with the same drive and determination as the pioneers of our past.

Spirit of Progress

Spirit of Progress is our 10-year action plan to help us create a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2030. Our priorities are to promote positive drinking, champion inclusion and diversity and pioneer grain-to-glass sustainability. As a part of this plan, we're committed to making a positive impact in Great Britain. On the people, on the environment, and in the future.

Promote positive drinking

Responsible consumption is paramount to who we are and how we sell. We encourage people to enjoy alcohol safely, providing them with the information and tools they need to make more informed choices.

Our initiatives

We have various initiatives in place to help promote positive drinking:

  • DRINKiQ: Having updated our program in 2021, we're reaching even more people across Britain with our responsible drinking message.
  • SMASHED: Now available as an online program, we educate young people on the risks associated with the misuse of alcohol.
  • In partnership with the Home Office, we sponsor 30 Best Bar None schemes to help deliver a safer night-time economy.
  • We support 150 Community Alcohol Partnerships in the UK.
Our results
  • SMASHED has reached over 333,000 pupils in 1,400 schools across the UK.
  • Our programme in partnership with NOFAS UK to drive better understanding of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder has reached over 1 million mums-to-be and delivered training to over 14,000 midwives and health professionals.

Pioneer grain-to-glass sustainability

From promoting sustainable agriculture to sourcing local ingredients, we work hard to protect and preserve Britain's natural resources and to help local people, businesses and communities alike.

Our initiatives
  • We have invested £100 million in renewable technologies in recent years.
  • We have made major improvements to our breweries and distilleries to improve water efficiency.
  • We were ranked by the CDP (previously Carbon Disclosure Project) as the best performing beverage company in the world for climate change strategy, emissions disclosure, and performance.
Our results

Investment and growth

We want to make sure our long-term legacy is a positive one. Creating employment opportunities throughout Great Britain, supporting the local economy, and investing in reliable infrastructure that will serve communities for many years to come.

Supporting the economy

  • We are the UK’s largest food and drink exporter, accounting for 10% of all UK food and drink exports.
  • We employ over 4,500 people across 64 UK sites, including 29 distilleries in Scotland and our plant in Northern Ireland. Our business also directly and indirectly supports a total of 45,400 jobs in the UK.
  • We have invested £35 million to re-open two iconic ‘lost’ Scottish distilleries: Port Ellen, on the famous whisky island of Islay, and Brora, on the remote eastern coast of Sutherland.

Supporting people

Our talented 4,500 employees are at the heart of our business, playing a vital role in the work we do. With a global focus, we look outside of Great Britain too, investing in initiatives to improve the wider world.

We know that for our business to thrive, we need diverse talent with a range of backgrounds, skills and capabilities. That's why we recently joined Open for Business, an alliance of leading companies from across the globe that are committed to supporting LGBT+ inclusion worldwide.

We also offer a range of professional development and training opportunities that encourage employees to develop their careers at Diageo Great Britain.
