As we mark World Environment Day, Diageo Mexico and Tequila Don Julio highlight how local partnerships and long-term investment can help strengthen water resilience in Jalisco.

At Diageo, we often talk about how water is fundamental to our business and our products. When we protect water, we protect our operations, our communities, the environment and build our climate resilience. Every part of our supply chain, from crops that feed our products to the water that cools our equipment, depends on it.

So, our approach to water is rooted in action. During fiscal year 2025, Diageo Mexico replenished more than double the volume of water used in its tequila operations in Jalisco.

Water is central to tequila operations, but it also supports the communities, agriculture and ecosystems that make the industry possible. That is why our approach focuses not only on improving efficiency within our operations, but also on restoring and protecting shared water resources for the future. Our work is guided by creating and protecting value for Diageo, and for wider society.

Investing in water resilience in Jalisco

Since 2023, Diageo Mexico and Tequila Don Julio have invested more than 100 million pesos in water stewardship projects across Jalisco, where we make our tequila. The projects are designed to improve local water access, support agriculture and strengthen long-term water resilience in communities across the region.

This work includes:

  • Installing 40 rainwater harvesting systems in public schools, benefiting more than 6,000 students
  • Constructing an artificial wetland in San Diego de Alejandría to clean wastewater for agricultural reuse
  • Upgrading a section of the water system in Atotonilco El Alto, supporting access to water for around 33,000 residents
  • Supporting wastewater treatment infrastructure in Ocotlán to help enable treated water reuse in agriculture
  • Donating the solar-powered “Margaritas” Wastewater Treatment Plant to support the cleaning of the San Joaquín stream, which is used for irrigation by regional farmers

Alongside these projects, Diageo Mexico and Tequila Don Julio reforested more than 50,000 native trees in Jalisco over the past three years and donated two nurseries capable of producing more than 20,000 native plants.

Water is essential for tequila production and for the communities that make it possible; it is a key resource for the resilience of territories facing climate change.

By replenishing more than double the volume of water we use in our tequila operations in Jalisco, we are not only progressing in our commitment but also strengthening local livelihoods and sustainability. This progress demonstrates what can be achieved when we combine local partnerships, a commitment to efficiency, and the determination of our people.”

Advancing collective action on water stewardship

The achievement reflects our broader approach to water stewardship, focused on improving water efficiency, replenishing the water used in operations and supporting collective action in water-stressed regions.

For us, water is more than a production input: it is a lifeline for families, agriculture, ecosystems, and the future of Jalisco.

This progress reflects the joint efforts of our communities, employees, and partners, and it motivates us to continue moving forward with humility and determination in every action we undertake.”
