How we pioneer
grain to glass sustainability
Pioneering grain to glass sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy. Our continued long-term success depends on the people and planet around us. We have a responsibility to ensure that our people, our suppliers, the communities around our operations, our customers and consumers, and society at large all thrive as a result of our business. Core to our Spirit of Progress action plan is sustainability across our entire value chain. Our business depends on natural resources, and we are directly affected by changes in climate and the related challenges of water stress and nature loss.
Water
Water is the most important ingredient in our products. It’s also a precious shared resource that is facing increasing pressure, in many parts of the world, by the impacts of climate change and the competing demands for freshwater resources.
Our strategy is based on best practice water stewardship in four areas: operations, supply chain, communities and advocacy.
How water stewardship is central to business and climate resilience
For World Water Week, Hina Nagarajan, Diageo’s President of Africa, shares her reflections on our water work and its importance to business resilience.
Carbon
We are working towards a lower carbon future and are following a science-based approach to drive the pace and scale of change required. Our targets to achieve net zero carbon emissions demonstrate our commitment to mitigating our impact on climate change.
Across our supply chain, we’re clear on the decarbonisation levers we control and the solutions that require collaboration with others to progress.
An update on Diageo’s sustainability goals to build climate resilience
In 2020, when we set ambitious environmental sustainability goals as part of our Sprit of Progress action plan, we didn’t have all the answers. But we knew progress would require innovation, long-term commitment and supportive policy environments.
Packaging
Packaging is an important part of our business. We’re prioritising action in packaging that delivers benefits in terms of carbon savings and increased efficiency while promoting our iconic brands.
Baileys paper bottle test heralds progress
Large percentage of drinkers who tried the packaging for the first time gave a big thumbs up to the sustainability credentials as well as desirability of new packaging.
Regenerative agriculture
We have a shared responsibility to restore the natural resources on which we all depend. We’re building the resilience of our supply chain by supporting farmers to be more resource-efficient and to adopt regenerative agriculture practices to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Guinness embarks on regenerative agriculture pilot
Ireland selected as location for three-year barley pilot which aims to drive positive outcomes for the planet and farmer livelihoods. The ambition is for the barley grown to be used to brew beautiful tasting Guinness.
