Learning for Life - A Beacon in Miami

Case study

Learning for Life is designed to transform the lives of people in the communities where we do business - and we are proud that our programme in Miami was recently recognised for its impact.

Learning for Life group shot

More than 300 people have graduated from our Learning for Life programme in Miami, which offers eight free weeks of skills and job readiness training plus a two-week paid internship in the tourism and hospitality industries. Learning for Life students have worked and received internships in restaurants, hotels and convention centers, catering companies and cruise lines across South Florida, so it is testimony to their hard work that the programme was awarded the Beacon Award for Education at the 12th Annual Beacon Awards at the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne in April 2014.

Learning for Life programmes focus on adult education, working in partnership with local educational, governmental, and training organisations. In Miami, we have worked closely with local employers and with the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University since 2012, teaching customer service skills and issuing relevant certifications, such as bartender, restaurant server, food handler, banquet setup, and guest services. Globally, Learning for Life is part of our overall community reinvestment programme, which has touched the lives of more than 102,000 people and currently operates in more than 30 countries.
