Guinness opens 'Test Taproom' at Baltimore Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House

The Test Taproom -- now open to the public -- features new, experimental beers alongside classics imported from Ireland

Feature

Pouring Guinness

The first perfect pint has been poured at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House near Baltimore, Maryland. While construction commences on the full brewing facility and visitor center, Guinness has opened a Test Taproom on site that will be open to the public every Friday to Sunday.

The Test Taproom will be a place to find out more about the Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House as well as enjoy delicious Guinness beer.  Beers on tap will be a mix of classic imports from Ireland, the American-brewed Guinness Blonde Lager, and brand new experimental beers brewed on the brewery's two barrel pilot system.

Leading up to the unveiling of the Test Taproom, brewers Peter Wiens and Hollie Stephenson were hard at work designing and crafting beers to capture the essence of the first operational Guinness brewery in the USA in more than 60 years.  Visitors to the Test Taproom will have the opportunity to sample three to six on-site brewed experimental beers on any given visit. Variants are being brewed in two barrel batches, which means turnover is frequent, and even repeat visitors will almost always be able to try something new. Alongside the new beers, the Test Taproom will of course serve pints of the original Guinness Draught. Bar tenders and brewery staff will be on hand to answer questions about the brewery and beers on tap. On its opening day alone, the Test Taproom served more than 600 visitors.

Guinness Test Tap Room

“The Test Taproom is a way for us to experiment and play around with some new ingredients,” Peter Wiens said.  "We’re thinking of it as a place to have a conversation with American consumers, figure out what they like, and enjoy a drink together responsably.”

The hours for the Test Taproom are Fridays 3pm-8pm, Saturdays 11am-8pm and Sundays 11am-5pm.  Food trucks will often be onsite, serving fine Maryland fare to accompany the excellent beer being poured.  A small selection of merchandise and clothing will be available for sale. The Test Taproom is located at 5001 Washington Boulevard, Halethorpe, MD 21227, 10 miles southwest of downtown Baltimore, on Route 1 just off Exit 3 on I-195.
