Global Beer, Wine and Spirits Producers' Report shows encouraging progress
At the two-year mark of a five-year initiative, the global beer, wine and spirits producers’ commitments to reduce harmful drinking have shown encouraging progress in key areas, according to a progress report launched today.

Originally signed in October 2012, our company joined other industry producers in the commitments to undertake a series of actions within five key areas:
- reducing underage drinking
- strengthening and expanding marketing codes of practice
- providing consumer information and responsible product innovation
- reducing drinking and driving
- enlisting the support of retailers to reduce harmful drinking.
Our Chief Executive, Ivan Menezes, joined fellow signatories including Jean-François van Boxmeer, Chief Executive, Heineken; Alan Clark, Chief Executive, SABMiller; Alexandre Ricard, Chief Executive, Pernod Ricard; and Carlos Brito, CEO AB InBev, to discuss progress made so far and agree the work that lies ahead for the duration of the initiative.
This includes expanding collective drink driving efforts to more countries; continuing work in targeted countries to implement a legal purchasing age; and continuing to collaborate with major retailers, to support the goal of reducing harmful drinking.

Speaking on the commitment to reduce drink and driving in support of the UN's Decade of Action for Road Safety, Menezes applauded the Global Alcohol Producers’ pilot prevention programmes in China, Colombia, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia and Vietnam, recognising the impact these pilots have already made in starting to shift attitudes to help tackle drink driving.
Collectively in 2014, the signatory companies operated 375 unique drink driving prevention programmes in 146 countries while we also partnered with governments, NGOs, and regional partners in India, South Africa, Ghana, Brazil, Great Britain, Taiwan and Lebanon to implement further programmes.
Menezes also pointed to clear progress being made in changing attitudes and behaviours with alcohol related fatalities having fallen significantly in many countries. Over a ten-year period, deaths in Europe have halved, in the US they have dropped by 22% and in Japan 74%. And in Australia over a three-year period they dropped by a third.
