New focus in Europe delivers record reduction in LTAs and severity rate

Nothing matters more than safety – and we’re delighted to have met our global target of less than one lost-time accident (LTA) and no work-related fatalities two years early. A look behind the fantastic results of our Europe Demand business gives some insights on what makes the difference.

In February 2017 we created a new role – Head of Health and Safety, Europe – to improve our health, safety and wellbeing (HSW) culture and performance in Europe. Alistair Aitken, who joined in this new role, explains: ‘Our first step was to conduct a comprehensive review to find out where we need to focus our efforts, and we identified three priorities around which we’ve built new programmes: safe driving (the top health and safety risk in our area of the business); leadership; and employee engagement. This last is really important because in the end safety is about culture – what people believe and how they behave.

"We put new resources and structures in place with new HSW roles and teams, including special HSW ambassadors," he continues. "Through their help and enthusiasm in delivering our new programmes, we’ve seen a real difference in our culture this year, which has translated into excellent performance – our LTA rate was down by 66%, and the severity of injuries reduced by a massive 91%, with only 54 days lost to injury this year, compared with 621 in F17. I’m really grateful to everyone in the business for embracing this journey with such energy and positivity."
