Intelligent chillers which learn when retailers are likely to open them are helping to ensure that our drinks are being served refreshingly cool - while saving energy.
Many of our beers and other drinks are best served chilled - essential to consumers, especially in growing economies such as Africa and Asia, but a potential contributor to the greenhouse gas footprint that we are aiming to reduce. We're helping to solve this with technology that ensures that drinks stay at the optimum temperature while using less energy: our new retail chillers, introduced in 2014, are free from hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) gas and foam and include a range of measures to save energy by up to 45% compared to standard chillers.
An 'intelligent energy management device' in the chiller monitors usage through motion sensors, so that the unit can be placed in low-energy standby mode at times when drinks are not being sold. The use of LED lighting, replacing fluorescent tubes, has also cut energy costs.
HFCs are a potent greenhouse gas, and we aim to eliminate them where we can. In some parts of the world, where facilities for HFC-free refrigerant supply and service do not currently exist, we're actively addressing the issue. We also have global programmes for recycling our chillers responsibly, preventing refrigerant gases from escaping into the atmosphere.
