Apprenticeship programmes

This four-year programme is structured to get the very best out of you. Year one will see you in college full time, split between the classroom and the workshop as you learn the fundamentals. Year two and three will be on-site four days a week, with one day in college to study for your Engineering HNC. Year four will be based in the workplace full time working alongside time served professionals as a key member of the team.

During year 1 you will build, assemble, install and commission a live electrical panel with emergency controls, stop/start sequence and techniques like PLC's that drive a motor control speed unit to activate a working panel and or conveyor system along with learning about measuring, marking out, bench fitting techniques along with lathe, milling and mechanical maintenance type activities.

Every week you’ll find yourself in the workplace and completing college work. You’ll have in-depth training on the different machines and different bottling lines. You’ll learn the end-to-end manufacturing process including quality checks, process improvements, line stoppages, machine maintenance and fault-finding, among much else. 

At the end of the programme, you’ll roll off with bags of experience, a SCQF Level 5 qualification in Food Manufacturing Excellence and a genuine prospect of a job.

At the end of the programme, you will have obtained your Engineering HNC.  

As an Engineer, you will have deep understanding of our operations. Depending on your interests, you can also work towards a variety of Manufacturing roles, such as Manufacturing Excellence roles, Capability or Team Leadership.

Spirit Supply plays a vital role in our supply chain. You will be directly involved in all of Operation Processes from Maltings, Distilling ,Warehouses & Effluent Treatment plants to learning how Asset Care and Laboratories support these Operational Sites. . You’ll spend three enjoyable years as a respected member of these groups, learning everything there is to know.

As a Spirit Operator you will have deep understanding of our operations, and you will have gained experience in a variety of processes. Depending on your interests, you can work towards a variety of Manufacturing roles, such as Process Improvement roles, or Team Leadership.

Our Maturation Operator Apprenticeship is designed to give you a springboard for a long and exciting career in warehousing. Every week you’ll find yourself in the workplace and completing college work. You’ll have in-depth training on the different areas of maturation. This covers filling, warehousing, disgorging and cask management operations. 

Your college time will give you an introduction to the principles of warehousing and storage. And at the end of the programme, you’ll roll off with bags of experience, a SCQF Level 5 qualification in Warehousing and Storage and a genuine prospect of a job as a maturation operator.

Our Coppersmith Apprenticeship is a 4 year, work based, assessed programme. While undergoing training you will transfer your knowledge to practice and become a proficient coppersmith. This is a four-year programme and you will attain an HNC through on/off job training. On completion of training, you will have the ability to undertake a wide range of fabrication, engineering and maintenance tasks. Activities based within the workshop in Alloa and on site within malt or grain distilling, central sites, bottling halls or external customers. Working in various environments must follow Risk Management Standards e.g. H&S, C&E, and Statutory Regulations.

As a Graduate Apprentice you earn while you learn. You will study towards a work-based BEng (Hons) Engineering: Design & Manufacture (Mechanical) degree at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh commencing September 2023, whilst receiving a competitive salary and benefits package.  

The degree programme will give you a firm grounding in Engineering core disciplines, then in Year 3 you will specialise and complete specific modules aligned with the growing engineering specialists within the Business area you will be working in.  

The academic learning delivery model at Heriot-Watt University for this Graduate Apprenticeship degree programme is day-release and ‘high-flex’. This means you will attend University one day per week but can choose to attend either in-person or remotely via online learning. 

Throughout the four years of study, you will have the opportunity to work in, and learn about the key aspects of both the Engineering and partner functions we work with across our Operational Supply Base.  You will rotate across different roles to ensure real depth of understanding of our supply chain operations and the technical aspects of our production processes.

This apprenticeship is available in Colombia. It provides students that are finishing their technician career with the opportunity to develop different skills in a 6-12 month programme (time period is dependent on the school). The programme can be paired with a variety of positions in functions such as Finance, Marketing, Corporate Relations and Sales.
