Carbon

The planet needs significant science-based action to create a sustainable, low-carbon future. We aim to reach net zero across our direct operations by 2030 and across our total value chain by 2050.

Overview

We’re working towards a lower carbon future and are following a science-based approach to drive the pace and scale of change required. Our targets to achieve net zero emissions demonstrate our commitment to mitigating our impact on climate change. We need significant action to create a sustainable low-carbon future and limit the damaging effects of climate change.

To achieve this goal, we have developed decarbonisation roadmaps detailing the measures we are taking and will take to reduce emissions, also ensuring that new sites are developed with low-emission technologies embedded from the outset. Across our supply chain, we are clear on the decarbonisation levers that we control and the solutions that require collaboration with others to progress.

We will aim to use the right technology with the lowest environmental impact across its lifecycle in each location, innovating and trailing new technologies through our innovation programme, Diageo Sustainable Solutions (DSS).

Our pathway to net zero

We support the Paris Agreement and we are a proud signatory to the Business Ambition for limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Core to our approach is innovation to help influence the changes needed to create and develop tomorrow’s low-carbon solutions.

As an important way to increase stakeholders’ and companies’ focus on climate change, we embrace the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) incorporating the framework into our reporting.

How we will achieve net zero

Our strategic approach to reach net zero is focused across our direct operation emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) and our supply chain (scope 3).

Across our direct operation emissions

We’ll maintain our investments to deliver a 100% reduction in emissions from our direct operations (scope 1&2) world by 2030.

Key to helping us achieve net zero carbon in our direct operations across the world is optimising our energy use and working towards using 100% renewable energy. Essential to this is reducing the amount of energy we consume, making our facilities more efficient and recovering as much energy as possible.

To do this, we will:

  • Embed energy efficiency into our processes
  • Progress to 100% renewable energy
  • Create additional renewable energy capacity to power our sites, exporting surplus energy to the local grid, through on-site developments and using power purchase agreements
  • Move our vehicles on to renewable and low emission alternatives
Across our supply chain

We’re continuing our efforts to decarbonise our value chain, focusing on where we can have the greatest impact at scale. Collaborations and partnerships with industry groups, other peers and NGOs are key for us to address issues around scope 3 emissions. As part of this, we are assessing opportunities to become more sustainable across our packaging and agricultural raw materials, as well as exploring partnerships to decarbonise.

We’re working with our suppliers to accelerate decarbonisation, reducing the impact of our packaging by eliminating unnecessary packaging, increasing recycled content and recyclability and supporting sustainable practices for the producers of our raw materials and ingredients.

Our Spirit of Progress targets

  • Become net zero carbon in our direct operations (Scopes 1 and 2)
  • Reduce our value chain (Scope 3) carbon emissions by 50% and reach net zero by 2050 or sooner

  • Use 100% renewable energy across all our direct operations
