Australian Packaging Covenant Action PlanDownload file
Globally and locally, Diageo is committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which we operate. We are focused on two key outcomes: (1) reducing our environmental footprint, and (2) reducing misuse of alcohol and promoting a positive drinking culture. We are actively working to minimise harm and promote positive action in these areas, through continuous improvement initiatives and by working with other interested parties, including governments.
Diageo Australia became a signatory to the original National Packaging Covenant in 2002. We have remained a member since then and are continuing our commitment to the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) from July 2010. Diageo Australia supports the goals of the Covenant to improve industry’s performance in all areas to reduce packaging waste.
We commend the introduction of the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines as a means of building environmental considerations into packaging at the initial design phase. Diageo’s own Sustainable Packaging Guidelines were developed and implemented globally in 2009, and we are committed to ensuring that all of our packaging is aligned to its principles.
Diageo has achieved substantial results over the past three years in terms of our own site recycling and reuse programs. Almost 100% (99.7%) of Diageo Australia’s product packaging is also now recyclable.
To date The NPC has served as a useful initiative to help drive increased reuse and recycling of packaging in our operations and promote other positive industry practices.
In preparing our first Action Plan for the first period of the APC 2010-2015, Diageo Australia has drawn on its previous experiences with the NPC and built upon these, as well as developing some new initiatives for the next period under the new APC.
