In October 2012 Diageo was one of 12 leading global producers of beer, wine, and spirits to launch new commitments to reduce harmful drinking. The Global Beer, Wine and Spirits Producers' commitments provide a co ordinated industry response to support member states in implementing the WHO's global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol.
These commitments are being implemented over five years from 2013 and cover work in the following five areas:
- Reducing underage drinking
- Strengthening and expanding marketing codes of practice
- Providing consumer information and responsible product innovation
- Reducing drinking and driving
- Enlisting the support of retailers to reduce harmful drinking.
Performance is tracked through annual reports on progress against key performance indicators, developed by Accenture Sustainability Services and assured by KPMG Sustainability. In year one of the Commitments (2013), we laid strong foundations, set benchmarks, established key performance indicators and built the tools we need to accelerate our efforts.
In year two (2014) of the five-year programme, the industry has shown progress in key areas including underage drinking, reducing drink driving and strengthening and expanding marketing codes of practice to promote responsible drinking. Our aim is to reduce the harmful use of alcohol through these programmes and working closely with governments and civil society.
