Diageo is top of consumer sector in Management Today's Britain's Most Admired Awards 2005

Diageo leaps 30 places in overall list, and wins special category award for quality of goods and services.

SABMiller AND Allied Domecq take second and third place in consumer sector, respecively.

· Tesco is named Britain’s Most Admired Company 2005

· Tesco chief Sir Terry Leahy retains title of BRITAIN’S MOST ADMIRED LEADER for third consecutive year

· Cadbury Schweppes tumbles to third place but still puts in a strong performance in several categories

· Retail fails to make it into the top ten for CSR (corporate social responsibility)

· High rankings for Wolseley, BSkyB and Diageo reflect a changing business landscape across traditional market sectors as pharmaceuticals slip

· Morrison’s, Pearson and Manchester United lose ground in this year’s rankings

· A strong showing for Tesco, Balfour Beatty and Burberry demonstrates that controversy does not necessarily impact on peer reputation

The winners of Management Today's Britain's Most Admired Companies awards 2005 in association with Mercer Human Resource Consulting are announced tonight.

Diageo takes advantage of the continued popularity of spirits to emerge at the top of the consumer sector ranking. It has moved an impressive 30 places from 37 to 7 in the overall list of most admired companies, and has secured a special category prize for quality of goods & services.
