Rare Whisky Auction now live

Some of the world's rarest, most exceptional whiskies are now available for a short time in a Rare Whisky charity auction with all money raised going to the Diageo Sponsored Kapchorwa Water of Life programme which raises money to provide rain water reservoirs for some of the poorest households in Kapchorwa, Eastern Uganda.

Many of the whiskies available are true collectors' items: works of whisky art that will increase in value over time due to their exceptional quality and the fact that they will become rarer and more precious with each day that passes.

Some of the highlights on offer include:

The Glenury Royal 50 year old: the oldest cask strength Glenury Royal ever bottled. Only 500 numbered bottles were made available and there will never be another release at this age from the (now closed) distillery. (Minimum price: £999)

Two lots of cask strength Rare Malts, many from closed distilleries.  Lot 1 includes Convalmore (24yo), Brora (20yo) and Rosebank (22yo).  Minimum price £350 per Lot.

A must for any serious Talisker fan: a trio of cast strength Special Releases - each a collector's item in its own right: Talisker 20, Talisker 25, Talisker 30, from the only Distillery on The Isle of Skye. Minimum price: £350.

A unique offering comprising a bottle from every Special Release from the now closed Port Ellen distillery: seven bottles of beautifully mature whisky from the Special Releases of 2001-2007.  These Releases have never been sold before as a collection.  All are from small numbered bottlings, making this one of the rarest, most valuable whisky offerings available. Minimum price: £1500.

The site is also making available some very special whiskies that are more affordable for the average pocket but which are nonetheless increasingly hard to find including a bottle of Caol lla 15 yo (Minimum price: £60) and 5 bottles of cask strength Cragganmore 14 yo (which was a Friends Exclusive) (Minimum price: £70).

All money raised will help provide rain-water reservoirs for some of the poorest households in Kapchorwa, Uganda so if you make a purchase you are not just gaining an exquisite whisky, you are also making a significant difference to peoples lives.  The site will close at 7pm CET Thursday July 31 2008. To visit the site click on the link below.

Diageo releases evaluation report of the 2007 Water of Life projects in Africa

Of the one billion people in the world estimated to have restricted access to safe drinking water, 400 million live in Africa. The importance of water to sustainable development is irrefutable: clean water contributes to improved health and education levels and reduces poverty.

Diageo’s Water of Life programme supports community-based projects that improve access to drinking water. Last year in Africa, Diageo accelerated the programme by launching its 1 Million Challenge – a commitment to provide drinking water to one million people in Africa every year until 2015, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals.

To understand fully the impact of the Water of Life projects, Diageo commissioned an evaluation to assess the number of individuals being reached and the wider social benefits achieved through water security.

Diageo commits to CEO Water Mandate

On the 30 October 2007 Diageo announced that Paul Walsh had signed up to the CEO Water Mandate, an initiative by business leaders in partnership with the UN Global Compact.

The CEO Water Mandate is a call to action on water in all its critical aspects - sustainable use, conservation, community engagement and performance reporting.  Ten other signatories have so far come foward, including the CEOs of Coca-Cola, Nestle, SABMiller and Unilever.  Under the mandate Diageo pledges to continue to improve its own performance with regard to water, encouraging commercial partners and others to sign up to the commitment.

In making the move, Paul Walsh said, 'Nothing in nature is more essential to our business than water.  To reflect this importance, conserving precious water resources is a vital part of our environmental programme and helping ensure that our communities in Africa have supplies of clean drinking water is central to our community investment.  I have signed the CEO Water Mandate to show how seriously we take the sustainability of our business and our communities and encourage others to join us.'

More information on the mandate and its signatories can be found by clicking on the UN Global Compact website link below.
