Local Communities

In October 2006, 168 Diageo employees from six European countries took part in a highly successful Community Day.  This is the first time Diageo employees have run one co-ordinated employee community initiative in multiple countries on the same day, with a common focus on helping 'vulnerable groups' (the elderly, disadvantaged young adults and disabled people).

The activities were varied.  The Swedish team spent the day with the Readers' Association, talking and reading to elderly people.  The Danish, Norwegian and Benelux teams also spent the day with lonely elderly people, working with local organisations including the Red Cross.  In Germany, Diageo employees shared work tasks with a group of 200 disabled people.  The Swiss team spent the day with mentally and physically disabled people and gave them an opportunity to discover new flavours, music and images.  A small number of employees will visit our Water of Life project in Uganda, act as ambassadors and share the Community Day experience with colleagues.  In turn they will learn from Diageo's contributions to local communities in Africa.
