Sustainable Packaging

Packaging represents a key area of focus for reducing our environmental impact. Our goal is for all Diageo packaging to be premium and sustainable. We have taken significant strides towards achieving this vision.

We have  developed guidelines on sustainable packaging that embed specific design principles detailing that Diageo packaging should where possible be made from sustainable materials and energy sources. The guidelines also explain that our packaging should be technically recyclable or reusable, while retaining the required functionality and brand cues and meeting our quality standards. The guidelines build on, support and formalise the several sustainable packaging initiatives that are already in place across Diageo. They also provide us with a framework for establishing sustainable packaging standards in our supply chain.

We have also been reviewing baseline data on the weight and recyclability of our packaging. This is enabling us to identify opportunities for further improvements. Weight reduction, and the opportunity it presents to reduce our environmental footprint, is an area that we continue to explore. We have already made good progress in several key brands and markets including replacing cardboard packaging with shrinkwrap and reducing the weight of glass bottles.

We have also embarked on an innovation agenda with our key packaging suppliers to implement projects to work towards our sustainable packaging aspirations.
